It is polite to give people an indication of what is at the end of a link before they click on it.

I can in theory agree with that. In practice there are a number of ways to discover the target site without clicking on the link. One of them is googling the link :-)

Nonetheless, it is polite to do so. It doesn't require them to use google, for instance.
