Well reading a hundred or so of those is disheartening... Mainly that our educational system is so lacking that these people have no clue.

Talk about LACKING!!!! M(40) is an odd number. 17 is an odd number. Add an odd number and an odd number and you get an even, which is not prime unless the even is 2.

Ok, let's just clear up some misconceptions.

The project mentioned in the article is called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, or GIMPS. Basically, there is a central server (located at www.mersenne.org/primenet) that has a BIG list of possible candidates, numbers that could be prime. The server assigns these candidates to the participants in the project according to the CPU speed of the participants' computers.

Before someone can join the project, he/she must first download a program called Prime95. Prime95 does not cost any money. After download, the new participant installs the program onto his/her computer. Then, he/she fills in his/her name, e-mail address, username, new password and approximately how many hours Prime95 will run for per day. After a self-test, which takes about an hour, the program is ready to run. After the self-test is done, Prime95 will receive a candidate (the faster the computer, the bigger the number) from the GIMPS server and perform an algorithm (called the Lucas-Lehmer test, or LL test) to see whether or not the number is prime. Of course, the bigger the number, the longer it takes. After the LL test is done , Prime95 automatically sends the result to the GIMPS server. The server then records that Person X completed the test for number Y and assigns Person X another number to test.

PARTICIPATING IN THE PROJECT REQUIRES ABSOLUTELY NO MATHEMATICAL KNOWLEDGE AT ALL. Prime95 takes care of ALL the math work, all the user has to do is sit back and watch or do something else. In addition, Prime95 DOES NOT slow down the user's computer. Much of the time that a computer is on, the computer is doing nothing. These times are called idle CPU cycles. Prime95 is programmed to take up these idle cycles. It runs at the LOWEST possible priority and therefore leaves all other programs alone.

For the most part, the response has been positive. With the wider release of the story, I had about 20 or so new messages offering congratulations this morning. There were a couple that weren't so thrilling though...

"what a waste of time, the number will soon be beat, loser"

was one of my favorites. Another e-mail was from a sysadmin offering congratulations and at the same time mentioning that primes have a use in encryption. It didn't come across in the AP article so I can understand the "lesson". However, he also sent the message to George, Richard Crandall, and Chris Caldwell.

The Yahoo boards are good for catching up on your bushgoredeanlimbaughGOPdem bashing but not much more. The news is out and it looks like we've already picked up 8000 new accounts in a rather short period of time so we should enjoy the new recruits, keep bringing in others, and charge on to M41.
