Default Oh... Heck... It's Valentine's Day

Did anyone else remember today is Valentine's Day? I didn't... Wasn't on my Calendar.

Feb 14th of every year. Celebrating the anniversary of some weird thing.

Some take it seriously. I have no idea why...

1917 US government releases the plain text of the "Zimmermann Telegram" to the public

This message included an offer by Germany that if Mexico allied itself with Germany in the war, then Germany would help Mexico recover the territory it had lost in the war with the United States in the late 1840's. This did little to encourage pro-German sentiment in the United Sates.

1932 The Lindbergh kidnapping - 20 month old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh kidnapped from home in East Amwell, New Jersey, found dead 12 May

There is a book by George Waller about this, Kidnap: The Story of the Lindbergh Case. Charles Lindbergh's interference greatly hampered the police investigation, and almost certainly prevented them from arresting the prime suspect, Bruno Richard Hauptmann, much earlier than they wound up doing.

It happened that, On April 5, 1933, three days after after $50,000.00 in ransom was in gold certificates was handed over, Executive Order 6102 mandated that people in the US turn in gold bullion, coin, and certificates. The $50,000.00 in gold certificates thus became a unrealizable asset, and a good portion was recovered and used as evidence in the trial.

On June 22, 1932, Congress passed the Federal Kidnapping Act, AKA the "Lindbergh Law."

In December 1935, the Lindberghs left the United States.

My first wife and I married on 2000.02.29. A special case leap-year.

For some weird reason, she didn't find my claim that I only had to recognize this mod() function every four (4 #) years (nominally) terribly funny... Let's just say this union didn't last many cycles...

I believe I have been blessed. Seriously...

For me, it's just a number on a calendar page. I believe a person tends to ignore things which don't affect them.

1995 Mississippi House of Representatives formally abolishes slavery, and ratifies 13th Amendment of US Constitution

However, they did not notify the U.S. archivist at the time, so the ratification was not official. This oversight was finally corrected after the movie Lincoln came out. On February 7, 2013, the Director of the Federal Registry informed Mississippi authorities that he had received the paperwork. "With this action, the state of Mississippi has ratified the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States."
