Andy Rourke

Andy Rourke, whose fluid bass playing helped The Smiths soar from their roots in Manchester, England, to become an influential and beloved indie rock band, has died at age 59.

Rourke had been ill with pancreatic cancer, Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr said as he announced the news.

"Andy will always be remembered," Marr said via Instagram, "as a kind and beautiful soul by everyone who knew him, and as a supremely gifted musician by people who love music."

Jim Brown

Jim Brown, the legendary American footballer who became a Hollywood action hero and civil rights activist, has died at the age of 87.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer passed away peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Thursday night, his wife said.

Georgia-born Brown led the Cleveland Browns to the National Football League title in 1964 and was chosen as the NFL's Most Valuable Player three times.

In 1966, he stunned the sporting world by retiring at the peak of his footballing career, aged just 30.

He devoted himself to acting and appeared in over 30 films, including Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday (1999) and The Dirty Dozen (1967), a World War Two classic that was filmed in England.

Another belated note. I only heard about this last night because I listen to the long-running radio program The Midnight Special. The first hour of the program was a tribute to him. I remember hearing that on his 84^th birthday last November, he was still touring.

Lightfoot died at a Toronto hospital on Monday night of natural causes, according to his publicist. The singer-songwriter had long suffered from serious health problems that caused extensive hospitalization in 2002.

Lightfoot hailed from a tiny town in Ontario. He first made his name in Toronto's coffeehouse scene. There, he impressed folk music stars Ian and Sylvia, who helped introduce him to the world outside Canada by recording some of his songs.

Lightfoot himself found international fame in 1971, with a song called "If You Could Read My Mind."
