I have a new computer, built from parts.
When I boot an ubuntu-16.04-server install image, it says 'machine check error 5' and reboots at once. When I boot an ubuntu-17.10-server install image, it gets to between 73% and 83% of the way through the install, then freezes and reboots. My suspicion is that this is a power issue - I have a 650W PSU for a GeForce 1080Ti, an i9-7940X and 64G memory, I thought that would be easily enough. Any other thoughts? I have removed and reseated the water block and the memory, to no avail; I don't have a spare low-end graphics card to try in place of the ridiculous one. |

Is all the memory kosher? -- run memtest for 24 hours.
Is the 650w PSU a good one like Corsair? |

Underclock the CPU, and/or over-volt, and/or underclock/overvolt memory, try again.
Install a known good hard disk and try again. Last fiddled with by Prime95 on 2018-03-24 at 21:02 |

Where does one find memtest nowadays? I thought it was an option when you booted an Ubuntu install image, but the ones I'm using (the server install) don't offer it.

Full specs of the machine? Mobo? Ram?
Is XMP enabled? The 600W PSU is certainly not going to be enough if you overclock. I also have the 7940X. The entire system together pulls almost 600W under just the CPU (overclocked). But this shouldn't be an issue if you're just installing the OS. |

Reduce the variables to as few as possible (for example, a single stick of RAM). Change the variables one at time (where possible). Run experiments. Repeat. It is possible your MB is bad; eliminating every other possibility would help you "point the finger". Having lots of spare kit (for example, PSUs, CPUs and Video Cards) helps, obviously. |

4.7 GHz non-AVX
4.0 GHz AVX 3.7 GHz AVX512 For all 14-cores at once. All 3 of these modes will pull around 350 - 380W from the CPU socket alone under the respective loads. (stock TDP is 165) The VRMs are only about 90% efficient. So you can add another 40W for that. Then probably another 60W or so for the ram. We're already at 480W from the PSU. Then all the other minor stuff: mobo, SSD, HD, fans, radiator pump, (idle) video card, etc... |
