(Not sure what forum... could plausibly be several different fora)

A friend of mine said to have discovered a new method to test "Mersenne prime numbers", but he did not want to use GIMPS to check. (2 ^ p) -1 is a prime number for p = 89335541 p = 119898941 p = 192300593 p = 241910377 p = 268777297 p = 285754177 p = 290294033 p = 315690521

5 fails out of 8 proposed primes. Seems to be a bad method.

No no no. You just don't get it. You see if one claims enough numbers are prime then eventually they get lucky with a real prime, and then they are famous. Even if they never tested any of them it is a potential way to claim that they discovered the prime when it eventually comes up. So actually it is a good method: just keep claiming more and more of these as prime and then you'll get credit for the awesome find when it happens.

Brilliant as usual, Sir!

And I know that some imitators of this clever plan already learned' from your wisdom.

One would think the clever planners would have learned to at least do some decently deep TF on their laundry list by now. (But we appreciate the laziness/carelessness).

Well they don't need to. Plenty of people here seem willing to do that work for them. Leverage of other people's resources is all part of the clever plan.
