That distinction in treatment based on "race" is also obvious when the 2nd amendment to the USA constitution comes into play. I don't think any person from a recognisable minority group would even think of going to a supermarket or any public place carrying assault weapons (let's not even begin about assaulting a state building during a protest action.)

In practice the second amendment does not apply to minorities (as is the case of a few others.)

There have been a couple of symbolic actions. An African American State Legislator was escorted into a Southern statehouse by legally armed African American bodyguards. Of course, this was preceded by extensive notice that this action would take place.

Exactly.

New rule could allow gas, firing squads for US executions (my emphasis)
Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is quietly amending its execution protocols, no longer requiring federal death sentences to be carried out by lethal injection and clearing the way to use other methods like firing squads and poison gas.

The amended rule, published Friday in the Federal Register, allows the U.S. government to conduct executions by lethal injection or use "any other manner prescribed by the law of the state in which the sentence was imposed." A number of states allow other methods of execution, including electrocution, inhaling nitrogen gas or death by firing squad.
In my lifetime, a number of States did use poison gas -- cyanide -- as a method of execution. It can be pretty gruesome.

Nitrogen is not a "poison gas." Its use in killing condemned criminals is as an asphyxiant. People have accidentally suffocated in pure nitrogen. Two NASA workers perished this way on March 19, 1981 as described here. It describes what happens when you breathe pure nitrogen as follows:
Quote:
Nearly 80 percent of the air we breathe is nitrogen, a virtually inert and usually harmless gas. Most of the rest is oxygen, which causes the release of carbon dioxide from our bloodstream into our lungs. This CO2 build-up triggers our sense of breathlessness, the need to inhale. But when breathing pure nitrogen, no CO2 is released into the lungs, and victims have no idea they are suffocating. They breathe normally until unconsciousness strikes.

And it strikes within seconds.
As a method of execution, nitrogen asphyxia sounds more humane than either cyanide or electrocution. It's quick and sure. Firing squads are also quick and sure (assuming the volley is accurate), but messy.

In 1789 Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin proposed that decapitation be used uniformly as the means of execution (rather than commoners being hanged), and that a mechanical device be used as a sure method, rather than the headsman, who didn't always strike the head off in a single blow.

However, he did not invent the device that came to be named for him, nor was he one of its victims. The stranger-than-fiction story may be found here.

I have had the opportunity to visit JPL. They have warning signs posted at the doors of rooms where LN2 tanks are in use. The signs mention that you will get 2 breaths before passing out. The signs are about as blunt as any official government sign that I have seen. The only one that beats that is one at the top of a waterfall that says "If you go over the falls you will die."
