Default Beginning GIMPS

I've just recently started using GIMPS, and while I understand that it will take quite awhile before anything I do becomes useful, I haven't yet seen confirmation that I'm doing anything at all. I started running Prime95, and about five minutes after beginning, the window closed. The process is still running (or so says Task Manager) and is using all the processor power I give it, but I have no way of knowing if it's actually doing anything useful, or if it's just running for the sake of running. What can I do to verify that something useful is happening?

In the same folder as Prime95.exe there is a file called "worktodo.txt", copy its content to this thread, and we can tell you what Prime95 is working on.

You can also check the file "prime.txt": If it has this line:
UsePrimenet=1
it means it's doing work for primenet, but if it has this line:
StressTester=1
it means it's just stresstesting your computer but not doing real work for GIMPS.

Yes. Things look fine. Your computer is doing Trial Factoring. The lines in the worktodo file show:
  1. "Factor" means that you are factoring.
  2. That bit of nonsense is the assignment key (normally you should not post them).
  3. "54066689" is the exponent that you are working on.
  4. "68,69" means that the number has been trial factored up to 68 bits and you are going to take it to the 69 bit level
Until you turn in a result, the website will not show that you have completed any work. When the assignment is finished, your machine will turn in the result (a found factor or that no factor was found), then you will get credit for the work completed.

BTW, if you see that little green icon in the systray, just put the mouse there and you can see how much work you have done. Right click on it and you can open the Prime95 window. (If you minimize it, the window will disappear, this is normal. That is probably what happened before.) If the icon is not in the systray, find where you put the program and run it again, the window will pop up. Then you can open the Options menu and select "Tray Icon", that way it will be handy to be seen.

one more bit of advice here:
If your window "disappeared" on you without you doing anything to make it happen, I would take that as a sign that either your windows computer needs rebooting or your mousepad is annoyingly sensitive.

A TF job like the ones you are doing gets around 2GHz-days of credit, and may take 2 days.

It's strongly recommended that you blank out your assignment keys when posting your worktodo file, as these could allow a malicious person to hijack your assignments.

I suppose one could hijack those assignments, but they really aren't much....6 or so days credit for the lot, and I have to do all the computation anyway, and I can get hundreds more like that from manual assignments -- what's the point, except to make everyone mad at me?

No reason, except to cause mischief.

I'd rather cause a different kind of mischief -- what are the chances of being able to do P-1 on a GPU? And how much memory is "adequate" for P-1?
