Just throwing an idea out there, but maybe it would be a good idea to coordinate with Numberphile (run by Brady Haran) so they can have a video out on the new prime shortly after the press release (If the verifications go smoothly).

I sent him a quick email with a link to this thread.

LOL... that one's funny. Must be one that I ran a verification on to see if it was a false positive (I did about 10 or so of them a while back... double/triple checking some oddities).

Looks like you were a couple months too early to catch this one

So, when would the 'discovery date' be, today, or months ago?

Good question... will it be like the (in)famous printout question... which one was discovered first... M521 or M607? Depends on if we go by when the computer found it, or when the printout was read.

(Isn't that how the anecdote goes? They read the printout in reverse order and saw M607 first, followed by M521 second?)

This is a wonderful way to start the year if true. Let the sleuthing begin!

So for those hunting for the potential prime, I found no "prime" entries in the exponent histories -- other than the one I mentioned earlier -- between 60M and 100M.

You'll probably only find those 3 weird ones I mentioned in another thread (false positives or one with a residue of 0x2).

In hopes of keeping anyone from wasting time, both George and I have done things to try and keep prime discoveries from showing up anywhere... previous little clues that led people to the past primes ahead of announcement won't work.

But of course I won't stop anyone from continuing to look... heck, that's half the fun and I'd probably be doing it too.

Surely the easiest method would be to kidnap AirSquirrels (or one of the other people that know what it is) and tickle him with an ostrich feather until he coughs up the exponent :P

I suppose I could write a script to attempt to reserve every exponent that should be available for double check and see what fails. But I'm lazy :-)
