I am completely new to GIMPS. I am currently an assigned Prime95 task on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. The computations are going well. I search the forums but could not find an answer to the following question.
I would like to know the procedure to stop an assigned Prime95 task to be able to update Ubuntu 18.04 LTS that often includes a computer reboot (usually update done in less than 15 min) to then restart the assigned Prime95 task after an Ubuntu update is done. |

If you are using mprime, try the -m switch
Normally, at shutdown, the program will get the system message and save its work. In fact, unless you reboot every 30 minutes, you should not care much. The work is saved at regular intervals (which you can set), and when the program crashes or is forcibly closed from the task manager, what is lost is only the last work after the last save. I usually run mprime through screen. I start it @reboot in my crontab.

If I understood well after a restart/reboot is completed after an update of the Ubuntu Linux OS I have to open in terminal the subdirectory where mprime and the results of the previous calculations are stored.
Then restart the calculations by typing ./mprime at the terminal prompt. What option for mprime should I use if any needed? Somehow we must tell mprime that this is a continuation run of previous calculations. Perhaps this is done automatically. |

You could add a @atboot command to the cronjob list, to automatically start mprime at boot (something like the autoexec.bat file on old DOS/Windows) |

Many thanks for replies and support for the newcomer to GIMPS I am.
I would like to suggest the above information be explicitly included in the available information and documentation on mprime. It may seems obvious to the experience user but for the newcomer it would very useful. I would suggest the following text: "If at any time during mprime calculations there is a need to either shutdown or reboot the computer, mprime calculation can be resumed by manually starting again mprime with no option in the subdirectory where the previous calculations where done. For instance in Linux at the terminal prompt type: ./mprime -m (initial start of mprime calculations) Answer the questions After reboot, only type ./mprime. (restart and continuation of previous calculations) or as suggested above include in the cronjob list @reboot. |
