It seems that self-driving cars are a hot subject these days. An autonomous vehicle would undoubtedly be quite useful. Of course, they'll probably also be a bit expensive - at least at first. So I'm just curious: how much would you be willing to pay for one, relative to a non-self-driving car of the same type?
Me? I personally wouldn't spend more than 25% extra. Last fiddled with by ixfd64 on 2012-10-06 at 22:11 |

I would pay more for other people to have self driving vehicles but I wouldn't pay to own one myself. Getting those damn arrogant drivers into respectful and sane autonomous cars would be a good thing to improve the riding conditions for cyclists.
Yes, I know that the readers of this forum are not damn arrogant drivers. But those other people that are D.A.D.s spoil it for everyone else. Last fiddled with by retina on 2012-10-07 at 00:56 |

Say you buy it to
Otherwise I am with retina here: putting some guys I know behind a no-wheel and no-pedals board would considerably increase the the safety of the traffic participants and my driving confidence too... |

As long as buying such a car is voluntary, why would aggressive drivers be interested in an autonomous vehicle? Because they're sorry for the way they drive?

There are many situations on the road where driver-to-driver communication is vital, and not just with the normal flashing indicators, flashing headlights and horn. In a congested situation it can be important to indicate to another road user what they should do rather than what you are intending to do - for example, if they are standing in the way and you need them to go first to resolve the situation even though under the normal traffic rules you would have right of way. (Flashing the headlights is not the correct signal in this case, despite its frequent use as such!) It isn't clear to me how self-driving vehicles interact with human drivers in these situations. If all vehicles on the road were self-driving and communicated using data channels, there would be no problem... but we're not there yet!
However, perhaps I should be less cynical. I have no experience of these new self-driving vehicles because they are not permitted on the public roads here or, as far as I know, anywhere in Europe. So perhaps they do cope with these situations adequately - it's just that I can't see how they would. |

I wouldn't pay any more money then I would on a normal car (ie. Ford Explorer). Actually, I would hope they were cheaper than normal cars. @United Kingdom: Stop making people pay the "road tax"!

The title of the thread should be "How much would you pay for a self-driving car?" Could someone please change it back? Thanks!

On the contrary, "self-driving cat" got my attention and I decided to see what was up here. I then went ahead and voted. If it was named correctly, I may not have visited.
I like cats. I'd pay quite a bit for a self driving one that I could ride without being thrown off. ![]() |
