I think a portable version of Prime95 could come in handy at times. It would be the same as the regular version, except it would have no installation footprint. That is, it will not change the registry, and configuration files will not be saved onto the hard drive; instead, the software would create different directories (on the removable storage media) for different computers. A portable version would have at least two benefits:
1. Some employers do not allow employees to install personal software onto company computers, but will allow them to be run from a disk, etc. In this case, a person can effectively run Prime95 on such computers just by plugging in the USB. 2. A portable version would make stress testing less time-consuming. Thoughts? |

I think Prime95 actually already fulfills the requirements of a portable application. It is entirely self-contained within its directory and does not write to the registry, etc.
If you're running Prime95 from a flash drive, you'll need to use the FixedHardwareUID option in prime.txt so that PrimeNet doesn't create a "new" computer every time you run your portable Prime95 on a new computer: Code:
If you want to run the program on several machines this is typically done by carrying the program and files around on portable media such as a floppy or USB memory stick. In this case, you need to defeat the program's automatic detection of hardware changes. To do this, in prime.txt set FixedHardwareUID=1 |

Make sure "start at bootup" is not checked. That option does write to the registry.
