Okay, as some of you may know from reading my posts, I'm looking into getting a new computer. My question is how good are HP computers verses Dell? I've heard things both ways so I wanted some direct opinions. Thanks.

My experiences with DELL.
The older DELL Optiplex ( Pentium 2 400 Mhz), the business model are very reliable, hundreds of them at work, still running. A single DELL Dimension with Celeron 1 Ghz Oct 2001, run daily no problems. Haven't delt with any of the newer ones. |

I just got a Dell and it works fine, it gets loud after a while running at full throttle 2 programs for 100% usage and taking advantage of hyperthreading which gives around 25% gain for me. If just running one it isn't loud. I got a 3.4 Ghz w/ 1 gig ram for around $650 w/ EMT64. The link below should work, it is a sc420 dell server. The computer has no monitor or sound card though, it is really a server, which is why it is so cheap for the processing power. It also has no windows, which would have to be purchased separately, but I happened to already have it. I bought a DVD burner from Newegg.com for $60. And I was good to go. I might be a sound card later too. It has been pretty reliable, and I think only once has it ever done something I thought was hardware trouble. Many games don't work with its onboard graphics, but some do. Hope this helps.
Sometime spoofee.com or slickdeals.net have good deals for computers, often using rebates. Other times they have coupons like 10% off dell or something. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...c420sapp&s=bsd |

I've bought several HP/Compaqs, they all have worked fine, with no hardware problems for... 4-5 years. They're reliable, never had to deal with tech support though. But that's where Dell completely kicks HP. So, if you want good tech support, go with the Dell

I personally like what I know, and I know Tigerdirect. I wouldn't be surprised if you can find cheaper prices than theirs, but I would be if theirs are more expensive than Dell or HP. I know someone who got a $2300 computer from HP, and it wasn't a $2300 computer. I could have gotten her the same quality computer, gotten her to get me one, gotten her to donate three to people who need it, and thrown a huge party to celebrate our accomplishment, all for less than what she paid. That's my take. |

I have had no problems with Dell desktop systems and would recommend them.
However, I wouldn't buy a laptop from Dell. Their laptop cooling system is not up to running Prime95. See my posts in the Hardware section under Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop. I must say Dell has a very generous warranty since they replaced the motherboard on that laptop three times! |

for all practical purposes, desktop systems from either are good machines. I marginally favor dell because of the excellent tech support.
For laptops, I don't recommend Dell's Inspiron line. Their Latitude series however is excellent. Fusion |

proibily overheated till cpu failed or cpu fan gets overheated seises up then cooling to cpu channel stops and instant cpu on a stick... dell optiplex gx1s with p3s run decent if there slot 1 type they have massive aluminium hs and a 80 mm fan drawing air though and out..
