"Frantically looking for a way out" cannot be used for Intel. They have more resources then we imagine and I think they know what they are doing. I think the GHz limit will force Intel and probably AMD to find interesting solutions to increase the performance. Itanium seems to be a good start. 64 bit technology too. Think ahead...

I think it can. The Prescott core was supposed to last quite a while longer, and then there was supposed to be another core after that. The 4GHz part has been cancelled and the core after Prescott has been scrapped. AMD, meanwhile, will be releasing a 4GHz-equivalent part shortly. They should also have dual-core chips available several months before Intel, and they demonstrated a dual-core chip publicly before Intel.

In any case, Intel will probably be 'desktopizing' the Pentium M, which should mean a sharp drop in sales from Prime95 users, given that it sucks on Prime95.

The best P4 overclock I saw : http://www.vr-zone.com.sg/?i=618&s=18
That scored about 28000 3DMarks in 2001SE. Still no Athlon impressive overclock. If you have some examples please share.

I doubt there are any examples that are impressive, especially in comparison to P4. Because of the shorter pipeline, which improves efficiency per clock, it doesn't overclock as well.
