I think the most valuable literary piece is a poem by Omar Khayam.
There is no hope I can do justice to it by translating it, regardless, for what it's worth it says:

"It's a (wine) vessel that the human mind adores. 100 kisses to its forehead.
This vessels maker of the world, fabricates such beautiful vessels and keeps smashing them to the ground."

The point is, whatever our purpose is, it's over before you know it.
If you are feeling down, try listening to some stand up comics on the net. It will take your mind off whatever is bothering you. It works for me.

I sometimes also get "down"; feel like I'm not being optimal.

Find a driving problem which interests you. Write some software; volunteer to teach young kids things they wouldn't ordinarily be exposed to; garden.

I'm currently working on a book (it probably won't sell a single copy, but the exercise is not easy and thus valuable).

At the end of the day we're all dead. IMO, what matters most is what we can do which will be beneficial and can be passed on.

I hope that makes sense.
