Default Add option to submit unsuccesful ECM work done

I think it would be a very helpful feature if users could submit unsuccessful ECM work done on a composite. There are lots of composites in the "factors tables" that are at digit levels which make NFS impossible but could maybe be tackled with ECM.

Currently ECM parameters for factors found can be posted, so maybe this form could relatively easily be extended?

As far as I know, you can always report it to the Primenet server. If you want to display the factoring history for the exponent, you can use the check-box in the exponent status page, or use the mersenne.ca page for the exponent.

If you are running Prime95 (or mprime) and it is using PrimeNet directly, it will report the work done. If you are using manual results submission, your results.json file will contain the data on the ECM done, successful or not.

I don't know about the FactorDB, but if it is related to Mersenne's I think that Factor DB might ingest the data.

But the primenet server will only accept results for Mersenne and Fermat numbers?

I was looking for data on ECM work done for other types of numbers such as factorials, Proth, and so on: http://factordb.com/tables.php

IMHO FactorDB is not the place for that data, as it can easily be abused. We already have issues with spammers periodically filling up FactorDB with arbitrary numbers and slowing the site down. What's to stop someone from pushing t20 ECM status updates for random c200's we have no interest in, thus filling up the database even more? Such a status reporting system should only be used for composites we actually care about.

Maybe it should be that such status updates can only be posted to numbers that already exist in the DB, and are of a special form (i.e. a*b^c+/-d), or are a factor of such a number ((a*b^c+/-d)/e).

I wouldn't be opposed to also allowing it for the leading edge of aliquot sequences below a certain start value (probably 1M or less), though I don't know how hard it is for the server to calculate whether a number belongs to a certain sequence.

Limiting it to certain composites is certainly a good idea, for all other numbers the chances that more than one person are working on them is probably close to zero.

All numbers in the Factor Tables as well as the Sequences (aliquot and HP) would be a good choice imo. I'd be interested in doing ECM work on those numbers but didn't do it for fear of wasting time and ressources.

Keep in mind that reservations (e.g. for aliquot sequences) are not stored in FactorDB, but rather in other systems and forum threads, so you'd still have to check those to avoid interfering with other people's work.
