The user also has quite a few "Bad" results and many unverified results with error codes.

Unless somebody in the next hour volunteers a faster computer, I'll put all 4 cores of my Q9550@2.80GHZ on a double-check.

I'm trying to keep it somewhat vague in case this is something that slipped through the cracks and would normally not be released yet.

I have found it but strangely it shows that it was found on 2009-04-12 02:27 - that can't be secret for so long?

Doesn't get the admin an E-Mail if it hits the jackpot ... this is almost a month ago. Or did they want it to be a secret??

It might have been a false-alarm.

As far as I know last time they checked it on a faster machine - if I would have a 16-core machine I would have checked it but there are certainly faster machines out there.

Anyway, funny that the guy didn't even realize it *hehe* ...

The admins always ask the discoverer to keep it secret until it's been verified.

One reason, as noted above: it might be erroneous.

... or else has simply kept the secret.

So with a 100M digit mersenne prime you would keep it secret for years?

(a) I would, but maybe others would find it harder to do so. (b) By the time a 100M-digit prime is found, we'll probably have significantly faster hardware. (c) As noted earlier, verification of a reported prime would be done on big-tin 16-or-more-CPU systems, so would take only a fraction of the time someone's home/work PC took for the original discovery.
