I can't remember when I saw the 2 unverified primes the first time. It might have been a few minutes before 20.00 MESZ, because after that I first checked the forum and then had to register.

Although this was my first post I'm participating in GIMPS since 1999.

Frank.

There has not been a v4 -> v5 server sync since George went on vacation. I suppose this has not been done as it would be extra work to have to hide the info on the new prime in v5 as well. That than would mean there will be no new sync until this prime has been verified as well. Is that correct?

As far as I can remember, someone always manages to definitively pin down the exact hour when a new prime is reported by showing that "Prime, UNVERIFIED : 1" appears one hour and not the previous hour. For last month's reported prime, it was patrik, as one can see from page 2 of the M44 thread. Hopefully someone will do the same for this soon.

Hope to hear about it soon.

Looks like the main page has been updated: http://www.mersenne.org/

This is incredible news. I am thinking one of these might be possible:
  • someone clever has reversed engineered George's "last few thousand iterations" check
  • Georges's program has a bug
  • Intel or AMD has a bug
  • someone has thought outside the box and has new algorithm, be that deterministic or probablistic
  • there is new type of machine being used
  • S.E.T.I. have made contact
  • just an amazing coincidence

In the unlikely event of two qualifying primes being found at about the same time, then the winner will be the first to either send their result to the PrimeNet server or to email their results to me.
So, no luck to the discoverer of M46.

I think, though, that this most recent discovery is actually M45, and here's why:
The average of the seven recent candidates ("M46") is 39454891, while the average of the older candidates ("M45"), excluding the one with the known fake residue, is 40311069. If we assume that "M45" is >10M digits, the average raises to 41028673.

@ paulunderwood, I think it's just the last on your list.

How much of a coincidence is it? Isn't it a bit like the shared-birthday 'paradox', i.e. not as unlikely as would seem at first. (I mean 12 primes over 12 years, two of them sharing a two week slot.)

I think I know which this one is :) My encrypted guess is 46FB8E6305771.

This exponent appeared at 19:xx in the 20:00 cleared.txt with a fake residue, but then in the 21:00 cleared.txt it had a new residue and the fake was moved to:

And like sharing birthdays, being two weeks apart doesn't imply
being in the same two week slot.

Any hope for those who don't happen to have copies of both versions of cleared.txt?
