Maybe he was/is in China.

I'll keep residues for each 1M iterations. PM me if you want to compare them each day or so.

This number had at least two other owners, who dropped the baton in February/March and then in May. Doesn't it suck to be them?

I am sorry to tell you that, but i really doubt that this candidate (I call it Mxx) is a prime.

Already when discovering M44, the fake residual was applied to the wrong exponent in order to hide to real candidate. This has to be done immediately (so it wasdone automaticly and not manually by George or so). Otherwise there would always be a time period where the real candidate was only hidden by the fake residual.

According to the thread, the prime is discovered around 18:xx, but Mxx is returned 7:xx. Can somebody check what the residual of that candidate was between the two timestamps (for example at 12:00)? (I have no history of the cleared.txt file). If the residual was different during that period, we can be pretty sure, that Mxx is not prime.

At least it is increasing the chances that a 10million digit prime was found.

What was done with the real candidate then? Did that (1) appear in cleared.txt with a residue faked in a different way? Or (2) with a random residue? Or (3) did it not appear in the cleared.txt file at all but remained in the status.txt file? Either of options (2) or (3), by the way, seem to me the most effective way to hide the probable prime prior to its verification if that is the only motivation.

Yes, at M44 the fake residue was put on this candidate:
29225803 69 L 0xB6C80136DB7FED__ 04-Sep-06 17:40 mcobb a2-170.0
and the real M44 was given another algorithm residue or just a random 64 bit number:
32582657 68 L 0x663C8660956654__ 04-Sep-06 17:33 curtisc wd-102--04l

So this might well be the case now too, if it was setup do be done automatically, so we shouldn't get too excited yet until doublechecks done.

Too bad those sites that stored cleared.txt have been down a long time. I tried starting my own now, but thats too late for this.

Hehe, bait and switch, this sleuthing is getting exciting.

I wonder if the two archive sites are down deliberately? Or is that just paranoid thinking?

No, I think they are been down awhile now, I checked them sometimes and they were always down.

I'm suspicious why people like Xilman, Silverman, akruppa and Tony Reix have not posted here at all :) Wonder if they know more. Tony Reix usually doublechecks this on a 16 cpu computer with Glucas.

When you consider it's really only one (the mersenneforum link redirects to the other one), it's quite possible that it could've just happened to go down.

There be a lot of "66" in the 32582657 residue! and the fake residue has been put to another exponent after the real result.

Them be clues thinks I.

I can't speak for the others but the reason I've not posted is that I don't have a clue as to which exponent may yield a prime and neither have I made any effort to find out. All will be come clear in due course is my attitude.

Just because I very occasionally learn of matters of interest slightly before the general public is not good grounds for assuming I'm omniscient.
