How does approximately a millimeter's difference in the length of an optical connection account for 60 nanoseconds (that's roughly 60 feet of travel at the speed of light in vacuum or normal-density air) of delay?????? Or do we have that much path as the light from the single-mode optical fiber is bouncing around trying to find the single-mode input?

Researchers find dark matter blob that could rewrite understanding of galaxies

Quote:
Roughly 2.4 billion light years from Earth, a massive blob of a mysterious, invisible substance known as dark matter is threatening to rewrite how scientists on this planet understand galaxies.

the one thing that really strikes me is that the third paragraph ?

Quote:
It's invisible, but it surrounds galaxies and larger clusters of galaxies. To detect it, scientists study how the gravity from dark matter bends and distorts light passing through it.
so it has mass is invisible ( at least relatively) and a refractive index sounds like glass to me.

Nah, it's made of cat hairs.

It's well known that cat hairs get everywhere, and that the majority of the missing mass in the universe is actually cat hairs.

Belive me --- I live with four of the buggers and cat hairs really do get everywhere.

I'd hate to run into the cat that coughed up that hairball.

I thought all the missing mass was the male-bovine-manure that the politicians speak. That stuff has to go somewhere. If not there, then where does it go?

New type of extra-chromosomal DNA discovered

Quote:
Unlike other forms of eccDNA, in microDNA the sequences of base pairs are non-repetitive and are usually found associated with particular genes. This suggests they may be produced by micro-deletions of small sections of the chromosomal DNA.
admittedly I'll have to read more of it myself I got it from someone else.
