Server maintenance thread

I'll start this new thread to track when I'm doing planned maintenance on the server.

It's been a while since I've installed updates and there's no shortage to catch up with, along with a few firmware updates, updated AV, etc.

I'll be taking the server offline at 06:30 AM UTC (10 minutes from now). The outage is estimated to last 10 minutes but given my previous bad estimates on the time it takes, I'll say it could be up to 20 minutes.

You could do it the Scotty way and give an estimate of 1 hour. And then when it takes "only" 30 minutes claim you pulled off a few miracles and managed to hasten the update.

Sage advice. Especially because it is taking longer... I haven't installed updates or rebooted in 3 months so there's a larger than usual # of updates installing right now and I'm well past the 10 minute time. Whoops.

So let's say it'll be 532 days, and when it's done in 35 minutes you'll be all like "Whoa, that guy is good!"

Sigh... and it's still taking longer. Again, due to the time between the last installs, I rebooted and installed more and have to reboot again.

So for anyone up late (in North America) or early (Europe), or wherever you hang your hat and you're bored and wondering why mersenne.org is still down, this is why.

The server is back online. I'm doing another check for any more updates to install but I think it's done. At worst I might have to reboot once more but it wouldn't take long if so.

EDIT: Argh... well, yeah, it needs some more updates after all. Another 10 minutes, give or take.

EDIT #2: Sigh... I forgot there's a SQL security update that came out as well. Might as well do that too. This won't take as long though (no reboot required).

EDIT #3: Yeah... okay, really really really for sure no kidding done.

Because servers are used by humans to do things, and sometimes those things involve 3rd party software.

I like to use Notepad++ and Beyond Compare, for instance, and while I generally trust them, I'm in the "trust but verify" camp.

I love the Find in Files tool in Notepad++. I use it often to work on a dozen files at once. Also, being able to find a multi-line section in multiple files and set it to "" is great.
