Default ECM terminated

I was running ECM-6.0 on my P4, 2.4Ghz, computer with 1 gig ram, on the number (19^193-1)/18. With B1=11e7 a single curve takes about two hours. For fun I thought I'd try B1=26e7 (sigma was set at 3686180483). It finished stage 1 in 13722014ms, but then says "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's suport team for more information."

I'm assuming that the problem is that I don't have enough ram, but since it said I should contact the support team, I am doing so.

Thanks,
Pace

Almost certainly a case of ECM trying to allocate more memory than your computer could offer. Which OS are you using? If you want to give it another try, use a higher number of blocks with the -k parameter. The default is 2, memory use decreases like sqrt(k), so -k 8 will use only half as much memory. Perhaps do stage 1 separately and save the residue so you won't have to re-run it if it bombs again.

Alex, would it be possible in the next release to tell GMP-ECM how much memory to use so that it can determine the optimal k value?

Yes, Torbjorn Granlund made the same suggestion. It is in the works.
