I'm not comfortable when I hear British pronunciations for filet and valet. On the cooking show Chopped I was a bit amused recently when some U.K. correction for paella was offered and immediately smacked down by a Latina judge. Every now and then I pause my attention over a word like coupe on BBC's Top Gear but their pronunciation is clearly more respectful of this not fully anglicized word.

Yes, vowels are so critical. At least for Japanese, Italian, Spanish, etc., five nice clean vowels will get most of the work done but even then few people seem to concentrate on getting them right.

Suggest that you go to Wiktionary and check the listed way to pronounce the 2.

ensure, insure

I came across insure instead of ensure in a nice tutorial guide for GGNFS today. Unstressed vowel word pairings like this are such a pitfall. It's subtle in that errors are easily unnoticed or ignored as spoken but glare back at one in print.

A Swedish friend mentioned one that I had never thought of before:

Mispronouncing avocado as avacado

I inadvertently pronounce avocado as alvacado; so not only do I mess up the vowel (and I wasn't even aware that I did this), I also inject an 'L' as well.

Dictionaries of English (such as WTNID) show the second vowel as a schwa, not either an "a" or "o". Perhaps the Swedish custom differs.
