Hello everyone,
I rented a virtual server. Installed llr2 on it, am running several threads in the background now. When I turn my computer off now the work just continues in the data center. Saves a lot on my electricity bill. Best regards. |

Sure, maybe. But most probably in the long term you pay more for the server rental, than you save in electricity.
I guess it depends upon your long term intentions. For short term leases, where you don't have to make capital expenses for hardware, then it can be cost effective. But if you already have the hardware then the incremental costs of electricity aren't onerous unless you have really old stuff and really high electricity costs. At the end of the day, the server centre is there to make money ... from you renting their stuff. And when you stop using them, you don't have any hardware to sell second hand to recoup some costs. |

It depends on local electricity costs. For many using cloud compute half way across the world is far cheaper. It is a bit more expensive for many others. |

When I bring the CapEx for the kit and supporting infrastructure into the analysis, it just doesn't make any sense except in exceptional situations (Personally Identifiable Information (PII), for example). |
