Default Most Hated Christmas Songs

I normally don't listen to much music, but at this time of year I do enjoy listening to a few holiday tunes. In most cities in the U.S. there are radio stations playing holiday music 24x7. I have a few favorites as do my wife and kids, but there are a few that I hate and choose to change stations (or turn off the radio) when they are played.

My least favorite is "My Favorite Things" by Barbara Steisand. I dislike her and everything about her.
My wife does not like "Christmas Shoes" by Bob Carlisle because it is so depressing.

What Christmas songs do you hate and why?

All of them. However, a few stand out as being so utterly awful that the death penalty should be reinstated. Absolute bottom of the pile woudl be, I'd suggest:

Mistletoe and Wine - Cliff Richard

Needs _no_ explanation, I'm sure, to anyone who's ever heard it.

I used to run discos for local youth groups, and, by obligation, the Christmas discos were always peppered with all of the corny Christmas classics (Slade, Wham!, etc.). The only thing that made me survive such trauma was the ability to inject this gem into the stream of codswallop:

I would add a special level of hell for the retailers that take a perfectly good Christmas song, co-opt it for their own marketing purposes, then inundate us with the prostituted version to such an extent that it, rather than the original version, is the first thing to come to mind when one hear the music. Overstock.com's co-option of "Jingle Bells" this holiday season being a perfectly awful example of such.

I broadly agree with these sentiments. Cliff of course specialises in crimbo- pap. But back in the 80's (and even as late as the early 90's) Shakin' Stevens did something similar. 'Merry Christmas Everyone' made number one in 1985, possibly because people thought they were buying Slade. Thats a pretty low trick, and a pretty poor record.

Here's a love/hate nomination: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (from the musical "Gypsy", or did it originate elsewhere?). When I'm happy, I hate it. When depressed, I love it.

I agree with you rogue: Barbara Striesand is not my cup of black tea with saffron (good for short memory). IMHO she should see a good plastic surgeon.

Well you present a very pessimistic view of Xmas music. Why not look on the brighter side and ask for what are the nostalgic music songs which are all time favourites? Im sure you would also get a varied response which you expect from this Thread. But this is only a suggestion and I am willing to go by the rules.
Right now Im listening to 'White Christmas' by the fantastic Glenn miller orchestra. and chorus : Its really great ! What about the original Bing Crosby version?
No! you don't have to switch radio stations! Tune in to one of the many as I do. My favourite is on Yahoo messenger radio where you have a variety of songs which you can pick or reject instantly and skip. Its called 'MY Station'
The next time around they wont play that particular song and artist Its as simple as that..

Tip: take your wife to an elaborately decorated restaurant for a candle light Xmas dinner and dance and see the difference. Recommend fillet of Pomfret with tartare sauce and a Russsian salad, and Blackforest cake! A fine white Burgundy is an excellent accompaniment with a Danish Blue.
It is great for the blues Man !

Is the song "(These are a Few of) My Favorite Things" what offends you or the particular rendition? I would say that the song itself is not one of my favorites. I remember a Kenny Rogers rendition that I would term "OK." I think Mel Torme did one that I would consider "good," but of course someone who really liked the song might assign it a higher grade.

I would agree with the post that casts aspursion on Overstock.com for their misappropriation of Jingle Bells as their theme song for the season. I read a newspaper column where the writer was watching for the first car company this year to misappropriate music from A Charlie Brown Christmas. In the Chicago marketing area, that car company was Ford. Boo!

The thread has been split, the sour half is in the soap box.

Bob, please stop personal insults at once.

That reminds me of a Christmas CD by Gloria Estefan. The music was arranged by Mel Torme. Individually I like Gloria's voice and Mel's style, but together, it didn't work for me. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't enjoyable to listen to either.

As for me - the best is "I wanna be a woman for a Christmas" by Vandals, and the shit is sucking "Happy New Year"...
