Default New instance types soon from AWS: next-gen C5, an FPGA instance, more GPU options

More details at this page.

The C5 (compute-intensive) instances aren't available yet. They will be Xeon Skylake with AVX-512 (sound familiar?). Not sure if this will be a custom chip made to Amazon's specs like the C4's are. For the C4 they removed stuff like thermal throttling from the chip, because Amazon themselves ensure a suitable ambient temperature in their data center.

The "elastic GPUs" also aren't available yet, but more details here.

The new F1 instance (FPGA) is available already, as a developer preview in the us-east-1 (N. Virginia) region. More details here. I wonder if this could be applicable to LL testing somehow... it would be quite a project.

Also some others, including an R4 instance type as the successor to the R3 (which was the slower counterpart to the C4 series but with a lot more memory).

Don't think I'll take up the new p2.16xlarge anytime soon, just under $185/hour

They're $14.40/hr in us-east-1.

Here's a "deep dive" Powerpoint presentation from Amazon about their F1 instances (FPGA).

Currently this recently-introduced instance type is only available in us-east-1 and seems fairly pricey. The f1.2xlarge with one Xilinx UltraScale+ VU9P FPGA, four Xeon E5-2686 v4 (Broadwell) cores, and 122 GiB of memory costs about $0.40 /hour at spot prices.

Still no word on when the C5s will come online, it seems.
