(There's a BIG learning curve in this niche area of number theory intersecting with efficient computation on huge operands. And that's just mainly for Mersenne primes. And I am a professional, or at least I used to play one in real life.;) Last fiddled with by kriesel on 2022-01-03 at 16:54 Reason: (ugh, pasted a link during edit, meant to paste the thread link after a post edit)

If it is really simple how do you imagine that no one else has found it in the thousands of years people have been studying mathematics?

Two economists are walking down the street...

"Is that a \$100 bill just laying there in the gutter!?!?" asks one of the economists.

"Of course not" answers the other economist without even glancing up from her phone where she's doing some somewhat advanced maths in several dimensions in real-time. "Or else, someone else would have already picked it up.

I have found that, sometimes, simple metaphors can communicate complex ideas in very easy-to-understand terms.

Trying to find counterexamples is the first step after "this might work" on the path toward "I should ask others if this is a good idea".
