It seems there are 30 au pairs who have had a similar welcome to the UK. I don't know whether "settled status" or "pre-settled status" pertain.

This February 24 story from France24 indicates a neat "Catch-22" aspect to the situation at that time.

Britain's au pair system 'killed' by Brexit
Quote:
<snip>
The system, which typically allows younger foreigners to stay with a family in a host country while they take care of their children, had continued in Britain unimpeded until the end of its transition from the EU at the end of 2020.

However, since the UK's definitive break with the bloc, young people who want to come from the EU to immerse themselves in British culture and learn English now have to obtain a work visa.

"Brexit killed our business, it's a very sad state of affairs," Cynthia Cary, from the Rainbow Au Pairs Ltd agency based near East Grinstead, south of London, told AFP.

Under post-Brexit working terms, au pairs now must earn a minimum of £20,000 ($28,000) per year to obtain a work visa.

That is significantly higher than the £5,000 per year typically given in the past.

60 people having problems like that is interesting.

Funny painful weeks ahead. No gas, no food, no lorry drivers, sometimes no water, but still there’s a lot of Coca-Cola on supermarkets.

Right, can’t do anything apart from drinking Coca-Cola instead of water. At least I have cheap books to dive in and get my brain busy with something else.

Sorry, but I can't let this one pass. I would have put this one in the funny link thread, but I guess here is more appropriate

https://www.theguardian.com/business...ur-fuel-crisis

quoting the article
Quote:
Thousands of Germans who live in the UK have been written to by the government asking them to drive lorries in
an attempt to ease the UK fuel crisis, even though the majority have never been at the wheel of an HGV.
They were included in a 1m-letter mass mailing that also tried to recruit ambulance drivers to get behind the
wheel of lorries. The recruitment drive is aimed at easing the UK’s supply chain shortages and a lack of petrol at
forecourts. The news came as a government minister warned that motorists could face another week of queues
at the pumps and an industry body said more than a quarter (26%) of independently owned petrol stations in
the UK were still dry.The Germans were automatically included in the mailout because German driving licences
issued before 1999 include an entitlement to drive small- to medium-sized trucks of up to 7.5 tonnes.
