No, it could easily have been fragmented by close approach to one of the giant planets, just not followed by impact into same. I believe such near misses produce greater tidal forces than the routine swings around the sun, which must occur at far greater distance to be survivable. [Sun is also much less dense in its far-outer regions, so less concentrated mass involved there].

The K-T-impactor / Deccan Traps flood basalts link grows stronger - this study suggests that the basalts had already been reupting for some time at the time of the impact, but the latter caused the eruption flow rate to ramp up dramatically:
