Hi comrades,
I use the mmff software to utilize my GPU for Fermat factoring. I like to reserve ranges and let it run about a month and then report. I noticed that there were 10 days left in my current run, and then today, if I am not mistaken, there are already 17 days left. I don't want to make a bug report, because I may have read the number wrong last night. One solution I have found is to break up the search range into about one day increments. But then I get long log files. Such a fun problem. Regards, Matt |

Maybe your GPU is throttling. When a GPU gets too hot, it usually reduce its "speed" (frequency clocks) to consume less and run cooler. Luigi |

That's probably what it was.
Thanks Luigi. Regards, Matt |

Luigi is correct about GPU throttling due to overheating. I have found another extremely subtle cause that affects Windoze machines. I have just refurbished an old machine and I forgot to make this change and it occurred overnight. You must adjust the power settings in the control panel for maximum performance. "Always On', "Never Off" for All devices, and here is the subtle one, the screen saver MUST be set to "None". Sometimes, it can stop your machine days after starting a mmff run!!!! Getting back to GPU overheating, I have had this happen in a basement that is 50 degrees F !! Since I run with the case open and it was with a machine that had only a single video card in it, I suspect fan failure caused the GPU to over heat I blame these cheap fans that have crummy sleeve bearings rather than decent ball bearings that cost 1 cent more. Perhaps LaurV is right to say water cooling is the way to go. I will try that this summer when temps become obnoxiously high. --Marv |
