The silence was nice. Don't disturb the peace you guys. Let sleeping dogs tell mistruths, and all that sort of thing ...

Silverman is preoccupied with the "real math" forum ATM.

Cet exposant a-t-il été définitivement écarté ? Je ne le crois pas. Il n’a sans doute pas été doublement vérifié. Je fais donc, une fois encore, appel à une personne de bonne volonté pour m’aider à LL-tester ce nombre.

Tested once and found composite. Double check still needs to be done. You can go to http://v5www.mersenne.org/report_llto find out about this and any other exponents which interest you. Just fill in a suitable range such as 37197500 to 37198000. Also see links on that same page for other possibilities, for example known factors.

Sorry, I'm not interested in volunteering to test this one, though.

Thanks for pointing out that part of the Mersenne site- I hadn't stumbled across it; very useful for us Misc. Maths aficionados.

Well, naturally it's only spreading the news.

I found out about it from this thread: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=10062

Probably has already been said, but:

If someone had came up with a new method of proving mersenne primes and supposedly used it to find one, why the heck would they come here to post the exponent for us to test?

Suppose the method actually works and you have a prime from it, report it for publication and claim your $100,000.

Otherwise you keep the method secret and let GIMPS prove the number prime by LL, and someone else gets your reward. What's the point in that?

If the method isn't rigorous and you just want to test it, but are confident in it, well a LL test only takes a few weeks on a $500 computer. Hopefully you are at least confident enough in your method to spend that expense yourself and not bother with other people to test it for you.
