I've spent a lot of time looking for the Great Wall of China. It is supposedly visible from space from 160 miles (or was that kilometers), but I'm not finding it. I've searched the Internet and I've seen some coordinates, but I don't see anything that appears to be the Great Wall. I can make out roads, railways (?), and rivers, but no Great Wall. If someone can find it and it is easily recognizable, please post the precise latitude and longitude so that I (and others) can find it).

Unfortunately, I don't have broadband, so I can't see it.

But for those of us in my position, there's Celestia. You can't get as good a resolution as you can with Google Earth, and Earth's surface isn't 3D, but you can get better resolution maps than the default, and you can also view other planets and stars.

One of the best places to view the Great Wall (on the ground, that is) is at Simatai, about 100k North of Beijing. Go to N40 16' 37'' E116 23' 6'' and I think you'll find that it is smack in the centre of your screen.

Thanks. Is the Great Wall the dark line going horizontally across the map? It appears that the light curvy thing appears to be a river.

It looks like the wall to me, but I trust your judgement.

I went to the Google Earth website and they have a forum too, just like us, and even they can't find the biggest man made thing on Earth, so you're probably right.

Then I flew along 3000 miles of the Northern border of China and saw not a thing that looked anything like it. I'm beginning to suspect it is an urban legend.

From what I have read it is visible from 100-200 miles from the surface. Since the color is grayish-brown, it might match the terrain around it, but I would suspect that it would cast a shadow in the desert. I've zoomed to about 100 miles and have had little luck. I've seen a number of things that I can't easily identify, but I wonder if they are roads or railroads. The wall supposedly curves a bit in many areas due to the terrain, but the things I saw were as straight as a line. I suspect some might be the result of building the composite image as I did see one 'zipper' (N46 16" and E120 14") in northern China that is clearly not on the surface of the Earth, but some artifact of the software that produces the map. If you turn on the Keyhole Community BBS option, there is something called GreatWallBeijing at N40 20" E116 28". If you go to N40 30" E116 23" there is a dark thing that you can follow north and south a ways. That could be a shadow from the Great Wall, but I don't know.

BTW, do you have a link to that thread?

P.S. I work with someone from China and even he can't identify anything as the Great Wall (without doubts). He says that there are no railroads or highways in these remote areas of China. That is probably true, but I'm seeing too many objects on the map that I know cannot be the Great Wall (based upon location) and I have no explanation for what they are.

This is the thread. One guy claims to have an overlay showing the wall, but it covers about a million square miles of rural China and I had a good look in there but could not see it.

Try looking at N37 44 42 E107 28 30, just SW of a 2X3 km lake. The wall (the white line interrupted by darker towers) can be followed almost 100 km running NW. It can be seen at an altitude of 150 km if you know exactly where to look, and is easily spotted from 10.
