Default Motion to cancel really old stagnant assignments

IN THE COURT OF COMMON SENSE
FOR THE DISTRICT OF GIMPS

XEBECER.................... )
Plaintiff .........................)

v. .................................) ..............................................................................................................................................................................20-cv-1

ANONYMOUS, et. al. ....)

MOTION TO CANCEL STAGNANT ASSIGNMENTS

Now comes the Plaintiff, and begs this Court to cancel a bunch of old assignments (like, 2015 stuff) which have never had any progress (like, since 2015), so that others may take those assignments.

Whereas, Plaintiff has observed that assignments with exponents larger than 332,000,000 are particularly lucrative to users with kick-ass hardware, and could lead to a somewhat lucrative prize, and

Whereas, Plaintiff has a pretty kick-ass system, and

Whereas, Plaintiff has observed that there are lots of assignments just over 332,000,000 for which the 'assignment' date and the 'last update' date are the same, and

Whereas many of these assignments are held by some moron named '-Anonymous-',

Plaintiff thinks it would be a really swell idea if somebody with a real username could take over these assignments, as soon as the Court deems appropriate.

Default Jealousy much?

There are an infinite number of potential assignments. Why do you want just those that someone else has reserved?

Just reserve some unused ones for yourself and start crunching.

If up to us (not members of the court, and in full knowledge of the fact that some argumentative people here will be all on our heads), assignments in 100M digits (332+ exponents) which show no progress in the last year, are free to poach.
You have all the chances to pick a random one, finish it in a month or two, depending on the hardware you have (with the new programs and improvements, it should be faster) and finish it before the anonymous assignee.

The only issue will be if you find a prime. But this won't happen

Otoh, there are plenty of exponents there which are not assigned, and have exactly the same chance of being prime. Pick yours, and start crunching. Let the lazy anon guys' exponents rot under their bottoms...

I was thinking 2 years. That is enough time to complete on older hardware. But, to clear them right now would involve a manual purge of assignments. George does not like to hand do that. A recent case showed why.

Ok, fair enough, I was just thinking of how long it takes the current hardware to get it done (I did the 666M in similar time, when that should take about 4-5 times longer and when the hardware only was half speed of what's today!), therefore take my 1 year with a grain of salt,it can be 2 years, or 3 years, I am ok with it. But the OP is talking about assignments from 2015!

Edit: for the "if you find a prime" issue, I guess it won't be an issue either. The assignee should have to show any progress (checkpoint files, etc) in the last 1/2/3/whatever years to have any claim. Hoarding exponents and not doing any work on them is (in my personal opinion) even worse than poaching.

322,000,000. This is insane. If no progress is reported within six-months, then nullify the assignment(s). I would think the server would be doing something on its own. No single user needs six-months of work accumulated, regardless of type.

Storm, these are the next EFF Award level exponents. As noted they may take more than 6 months on older equipment. George has specifically allowed them plenty of time (no expiry). There are plenty of available exponents in the area for anyone to work. There is no milestone pressure. Also, it was figured that many of these might be sneaker-net machines. There is no reason to sweat over them.

Very old machines can easily take 5+ or 10+ years on 332M exponents. I'm sure most of the assignments were users who had no idea how much work was required and they abandoned them very quickly.
In my opinion they could be deleted after 1 or 2 years of no progress reported, but again it is not really urgent as there are plenty of exponents to choose from.

No, it's not really urgent. If this number continues to rise, then it may become so. Plenty of exponents: The Primenet ceiling is 999,999,999. With the wavefront appearing to be around 100,000,000, there are way more than plenty.

An old slow machine. I have one. A Dell Core2Duo made in 2008. It sat in my closet in a box for years. I pulled it out to test it recently. It can run Prime95 without any problems. As it is, anything other than small ECM's are beyond its practical limits now.
