Perhaps others will participate in this.
At my locale in Southern Indiana, gas is currently $5.22 for 87-octane. Diesel fuel is $5.88. I am glad I do not have to drive far for groceries and such. I do not see how private farmers who work the land for crops will get by. I grew up in farm country south of The Ohio River so I know how it works. The ones I knew all had large storage tanks. Some were as large as 250 gallons, (946 liters). Many may have to sell out. |

In Norway (major oil-producer) I yesterday paid 27 NOK/litre, which amounts to more than 10.5 USD/gallon.

See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61770710 and https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61731161
In the latter, average UK prices for petrol on 2022-06-09 was 180.73p per litre and for diesel it was 186.57p. At the spot rate according to https://xe.com, these are now $2.2255 and $2.2975 per litre. The conversion rate from litre to US gallon is 3.7854118, so the UK prices in US terms are $8.424 per gallon for petrol (gas in the vernacular) and $8.697 per gallon for diesel, both rounded to 0.1ยข as it traditional on forecourts. |

There's been pressure on local farms from lots of fronts ever since the corporations got into agribusiness. Fuel prices are really a minor piece, but I get it, everything adds up. If you want local farmers to stay in business, you change the economic model to support them (and I don't mean the price of fuel). |

I worked with a man from Norway about 20 years ago. He told me about fuel in Europe being sold by the litre. At that time, the litre price in Europe was way beyond the gallon price here in the U.S. Then, gasoline here was a little above $2.00. It seems like a poor excuse to use a war in Eastern Europe by big oil producers to jack prices way up. They seem to use any and every excuse possible.

Of course, check tax levels for part of those petrol prices - here is 2017 for OECD countries: OECD Gas Excise Tax Rates 2017 Country Tax Per U.S. Gallon Source: โConsumption Tax Trends 2018,โ Organisation for Co-operation and Economic Development Australia $1.17 Austria $2.10 Belgium $2.58 Canada $0.74 Chile $1.69 Czech Republic $2.08 Denmark $2.63 Estonia $2.19 Finland $2.97 France $2.78 Germany $2.79 Greece $2.99 Hungary $1.69 Iceland $2.68 Ireland $2.51 Israel $3.17 Italy $3.11 Japan $1.91 Korea $2.62 Latvia $1.86 Lithuania $1.85 Luxembourg $1.97 Mexico $0.00 Netherlands $3.36 New Zealand $1.79 Norway $2.85 Poland $1.67 Portugal $2.78 Slovakia $2.19 Slovenia $2.41 Spain $1.97 Sweden $2.73 Switzerland $2.81 Turkey $2.47 United Kingdom $2.82 United States $0.56 Average OECD $2.24 Last fiddled with by LordJulius on 2022-06-12 at 00:44 |

2.5 weeks ago when I last filled up the car it was 16.49 DKK/liter = $8.87 per gallon in Denmark, and it is on one of the cheaper unmanned stations.

There is considerable variation in average price per US gallon by state.
Per https://www.gasbuddy.com/usa shows $6.419 (california) to $4.470 (Georgia). And also within a state by location: Santa Barbara CA 6.257 to San Francisco CA $6.625. I wonder if there are sites helping consumers find the lowest local prices, around the world, like http://www.madisongasprices.com/for the USA with its options for areas, company, or history. I often use that from a laptop to choose when and where to restock, as it's faster than doing so on a smartphone. As a youngster running farm equipment for my father, it was common to refill a tractor's tank 3 times a day. That was hand pumped from an underground tank. Farms and equipment are several times bigger now per farmer. Milk and grain prices paid farmers have not kept up with inflation. But inputs they buy have. They've made up the difference with several methods. (Reduced tillage which takes less energy, less labor per unit of production by bigger equipment and more automation, which takes more energy, better seed & animal genetics, GPS allowing fine tuning of fertilizer inputs versus field location come to mind.) One factor affecting the price of gas or diesel is the price of crude oil. During the OPEC-Russia oil price war of 2020 (which was also during the COVID pandemic), Brent crude dropped below $20 per barrel, and oil futures prices went negative. (As explained at the time on the Forum, this meant that the market was so glutted with oil, traders had run out of places to store it, so would actually have been willing to pay someone to take it off their hands.)
Then, facing up to the plummet in demand, in the spring of 2020, OPEC and Russia agreed to cut production by 10 million barrels a day - about 10% of demand. Since then, demand has rebounded, but production, not so much. The price of oil is now pushing $120 per barrel. Other factors, which vary by state, include special requirements on gasoline blends or the sulfur content of diesel, and the cost of getting the fuel to the pumps. Shipping costs depend partly on where the gasoline is refined, and how close it can be brought to where it's needed by pipeline. (It has to be trucked the rest of the way.) Refining capacity (or the lack thereof) affects gas prices. Natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes can at least temporarily put refineries out of action and interrupt transportation, leading to at least local shortages. The federal motor fuel tax is 18.4 cents per gallon for gas/gasohol, and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel. Motor fuel used for farming is exempt from federal motor fuel taxes, and AFAIK from state motor fuel taxes as well. Diesel fuel for off-road use is dyed red to indicate its tax-free status. If you're caught using dyed diesel on the road, you're in trouble. The last time the federal motor fuel tax was raised was in 1993. Individual states have their own motor fuel taxes. The highest gas tax is in Pennsylvania, 58.6 cents per gallon. Next highest is California, 53.3 cents per gallon. The lowest is Alaska, 8.95 cents per gallon. |
