How can I do P1 factoring only, the part that takes large quantities of RAM? I thought that choosing only "Mersenne numbers to factor" would do it, but that seems to be only factoring that doesn't require much RAM. I have plenty of RAM in one of my machines and would like to make use of it so that people with less RAM don't have to do the P1 factoring part, they can go straight to LL. Is this possible? I suppose I could just grab exponents and then manually unreserve them once the P1 part is done, but that seems silly...
Or am I trying to do something pointless? ![]() |

There are a few ways to try to do P-1 only.
there have been attempts to do P-1 in a semi-auto mode. See this http://mersenneforum.org/showthread....1671#post11671 There is more discussion here. http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=2266 What you are talking about is not pointless. As a matter of fact, there are several folks that are trying to "clean-up" all exponents that have had 1 L-L, but weren't P-1'ed. This can help save DC'ing time. With lots of RAM, you could help. I would love to have you helping out in the Mersenne-Aries work. I am obsessed with p-1 testing and that is what I have both of my p4s on. The only disadvantage about doing this is that about once a week you manually have to submit results and update worktodo.ini but that only takes about a minute.
But the decision is up to you. You won't find a new prime this way but I find it more exciting than LL testing. |

The chance of me finding a prime anyway is what, 1/200000, so I'm not worried much about losing that chance
![]() I assume the above-mentioned post is still the best method to engage in this testing? If not, or if you have any suggestions please let me know. |

I found the semi-automatic method described in the "above-mentioned post" was not very useful - most exponents in the current primenet ranges have been P-1'd, thanks in large part to the Mersenne-aries - see their subforum of the Data forum. They'd love to have you on board - there's plenty more P-1 to do!
