Hack the head unit, endless undetectable wiretap in your private space. Just the cell tower connection logs from the modem tracks all movements and business records don’t require individual warrants. Dealers won’t tell you where the modem is or How to remove it. The ones I have hunted down can still be unplugged physically in the head units but it’s unacceptable."

If cars could be tracked like this wouldn't car theft be history?

iOS 14 introduces a range of features to let users control which data each app can access, including clipboard notifications and also an option to disable tracking between apps. These features are already causing problems for some developers, and Facebook in particular is concerned about its ad business ahead of these changes.

Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Wehner told CNBC today that the company fears that iOS 14 will have a negative impact on how Facebook operates its advertisements. As the company’s revenue comes in large part from advertisements, any attempt to hinder such practice will hurt Facebook’s business.

I recently became aware that since 2018 Apple prevents the use of efficient ad and tracking blockers (like uBlockOrigin f.i.) in their Safari browser.

Rightly so : users don't have the right to decide how many ads they will see on their computers, this is a prerogative of the hard- and software manufacturers :-(

I suppose the next evolution will be that the devices, the OS and the programs will be in charge of which sites you browse and what data you work with.

If we gave the users control over our tracking and surveillance we just know they will choose the "wrong" option. So of course it is better that we choose for them, we know better what the user wants than the users know themselves.

Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86 | Android Police -- The company says this is for enhanced privacy/security, but the real motivation is quickly revealed:

The company has said in the past that it believes showing the full address can make it harder to tell if the current site is legitimate. "Showing the full URL may detract from the parts of the URL that are more important to making a security decision on a webpage," Chromium software engineer Livvie Lin said in a design document earlier this year.

However, it's also worth considering that making the web address less important, as this feature does, benefits Google as a company. Google's goal with Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) and similar technologies is to keep users on Google-hosted content as much as possible, and Chrome for Android already modifies the address bar on AMP pages to hide that the pages are hosted by Google. Modifying addresses on the desktop is another step towards making them irrelevant, which hurts the decentralized nature of the internet as a whole.

While we are on the subject of Google evilness... I have noticed a couple of times when visiting sites that up pops Google saying "Hi Paul, do you wish to sign in?". Does this mean the sites know exactly who has visited? I use FF. Is there a setting I can use to stop this disconcerting behaviour?

Delete unused cookies. Disable JS. Blackhole web bug sites.

Paul, do you manage your FF privacy settings in cookies-only-for-whitelisted-sites mode? If not, I suggest deleting all cookies and switching to that mode, adding sites that you know have a legitimate use for cookies (e.g. your online bank) as warranted.

And, do you use the Ghostery add-on?
