SAFE MODE....

I seem to recall someone mentioning a few months ago that running Windows in Safe Mode allows Prime95 to run faster...

Just for fun I tried it today with surprisingly good results:

My PIV 2.8 Ghz per iteration time for a 26M exponent dropped from 0.064 to 0.059 seconds ... about 8% faster!!!

Any reason why I (or anyone else with a Prime95 dedicated PC) shouldn't do the same for all such PCs?

I would, if I was going to be gone for a day or more. That is provided the machine will not need the net. I figured once that with my Athalon, a shut down and boot to safe mode before bedtime, then reboot once getting home from work, would have a net benefit.

Do you want to be safe ... or full-featured?

It takes noticeable CPU time to do all those nonessential un-safe doodads features. That's why they weren't done back in the old days when computers were computers and they were all about numbers, not features. Real GIMPSers don't need no stinking features.

Even in Safe Mode I can still access the internet and communicate with the V5 server....if I choose the option to boot in Safe Mode with Network Connections.

BTW the stats were NOT a blip....it ran over-night in Safe Mode and maintained the 0.059 pace.

I just tried this on my OC'd core 2 quad (Q6600) and I didn't see any improvement. I'll try to run it longer and see if anything changes.

My machine is older ... which only means it had more time to have software installed and junk accumulate.

Maybe if your machine is newer (hence junk free) then there might be no clutter for SafeMode to eliminate

I'm going to try it on my new (though refurbished) and junk free PIV next.

i have heard mixed results with this
i have even heard slower for some reason i think
be careful though having connection to the internet without virus protection could mean problems

Maybe I am uninformed but I thought "SafeMode" was Safe and kept out pretty much everything??????

it doesnt if you allow network connections
it boots basically just the operating system without even unnecessary drivers and services
an antivirus program will not be started

Hmmmm.....

Now if I am in a home network with a build in HW/SW firewall then nothing should get in unless I "invite" it by going to the wrong site and the wrong time?? OR am I wrong again.

Maybe the only "safe" thing to do is stay our of safemode or while in it unplug the network cable or NOT start the network and reboot in regular mode now and then to get/send to V5.

as long as you dont go the wrong site you should be fine
i wouldnt surf the internet while in safe mode unless i needed to though
