Germany dropped out, too. The win against Costa Rica was not enough because Spain lost to Japan. Japan first of the group, that is a big surprise!

There were a few minutes during 2nd half where both Germany and Spain were out, but then Germany equalized and took the lead in their match, which actually caused Spain to be back in.

Actually we can't blaim Spain for losing against Japan. It was Germany's own defeat against Japan that made things so difficult. Sometimes small errors can have big consequences: Initially Hansi Flick claimed that players who show up with the best performances will go to the worldcup. But in the end he left Mats Hummels out off the squad, the best centre-back of the current Bundesliga season, because he has too much of an own opinion. Instead against Japan he brought Schlotterbeck, a constant threat to the own goal (3 penalties caused in 6 national team appearances before the worldcup) and Germany paid the price for it.
All in all this was quite desafortunate. I think one has seen that the team has a lot of potential and believe that they could have come far if they had survived the group. The short preparation time for this worldcup was another problem, but one that other teams (but not all) were facing as well. In the last group matches, (like France before) both Brazil and Portugal filed B teams and lost their respective matches but still managed to stay top of the group.
In my opinion this attitude to rest the players is lamentable. While Australia and Switherland still managed to conquer place 2 in their groups by their own force, Uruguay may bewail bitterly their exit in the Portugal group. The round of last 16 is Netherlands - USA Argentina - Australia France - Poland England - Senegal Japan - Croatia Brazil - South Corea Morocco - Spain Portugal - Switherland Somehow all the big teams managed to evade each other. So (although I keep my fingers crossed for the outsiders), without further surprises we might see quarter finals Croatia - Brazil Netherlands - Argentina Spain - Portugal England - France In the last row you see the primary reason why I did not expect England and Germany to meet in this worldcup ;-) |

I see that the odds of a
Europe - Non-Europe Final are rather good. |

First surprise in the round of last 16: Morocco beats Spain in the penalities. The Moroccian keeper stopped all three attempts of the Spanish!
