Could somebody please tell me where the logout link is for those who have logged in to make aposting and hate leaving things open once done!
Regards,
Budgie

It is さようなら.
To see the thread that lead up to it saying this see this thread: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=6584

Pardon me if this is stupid question but: "Why the disguise? What is the reason for NOT having a button that simply says "LOGOFF" or "LOGOUT"?

petrw1,

I've temporarily forgotten the real answer to that question. But I can point you to some clues: :-)

What nym (userid) does this forum's top administrator use?

"Xyzzy"

not some common name like "Joe".

not some prefixed slang term (e.g. "Mini-Geek").

not some common noun (e.g. "Budgie").

not some nickname for a region's inhabitants (see left margin).

not some ethnic food (e.g. "head cheese").

not some indicator of high office (e.g. "head honcho").

not even some glorious reference to the glorious client software of some glorious distributed computing project (e.g. "Prime95").

But ... "Xyzzy"

Clearly, "Xyzzy" is a guy who likes to be mysterious, and thus likely to do mysterious things, like changing a button label from "Logoff" (or "Logout" or whatever it was) to something in Arabic then to "さようなら"

, or like inserting a fake quotation between someone's nym and avatar in the left margin.

I always thought Xyzzy got the name from the old computer game, Adventure.

From Wikipedia:

"xyzzy
xyzzy was a magic word found in the game.[7] It often confounds early players. They will type in "xyzzy" to see if it's useful at different parts and get the generic response "Nothing happens". This became an inside joke amongst gamers."

I like it- Nothing Happens.

I'm an American and this one has me scratching my head. Pity the poor English-as-a-second-language people that try to make sense of this thread.

We've developed a tolerance for poor English here.
