I had a bit of a scare a couple of days ago... Got to my desk, and my compute was dead...
Sigh... Tear the machine down to the minimum on a bench. Determined the PSU was bad. Built it back up, and thankfully nothing else was fried. But... It reminded me just how important backups are... Reconfirmed all backup systems are working, and also added an addition offsite... Duplicity is rather low-level, but also very serious.. It can work with all kinds of backends. Commercial or private. |

Those who take backups and those who suffer serious data loss. I heartily recommend backuppc. |

I use bup and/or restic on my systems.
I also run a Nextcloud docker image which uses borg backup. The concepts of those three seem to be similar. They use deduplication, so there is no incremental/full dichotomy. I cannot say much about borg yet except that it seems to work reasonably: I have not used it interactively yet. In my experience, bup produces smaller archives than restic, but the backup process takes much longer (at least from ZFS filesystems). bup can employ the nice par2cmdline to add some redundancy to your backup data, which is recommendable if you have a not-fully reliable NAS (such as mine). restic is so fast that you can really afford frequent backups. Moreover, it is available as a self-contained single executable file, which comes in handy if you need to restore a machine without another working machine nearby. Whereas bup needs Python. That may be a hindrance in a postapocalyptic scenario. Deduplication works great. I have used restic to archive the daily backups of 10 Windows machines into one restic repository. With regular pruning that keeps the amount of snapshots (i.e. history) limited to about 50. The current backups take 2 TB, the associated archive 3 TB. |
