I don't think it was ever mentioned that an LL test was performed

I was thinking... if they're smart, someone could just randomnly pick a number we've not tested and e-mail it to George. If they win the lottery and guess right, they win. Flaw in the system, unforunately

He says an LL test was run but his mom won't let him run full time anymore because of the electricity cost.

I told him that if it pans out he is responsible for fulfilling the EFF award rules and I think the EFF (or the academic journal) would want some kind of proof that the program exists.

99.9999% chance that this is merely humoring a 15 year old. But perhaps he will grow from the experience (such as learning the importance of software testing). Anyway, costs us nothing to do so.

So, could this lead to an official process, where candidates are tested like this, when there is some legitimate argument for doing so?

That's not a bad idea!

I found two top 5000 primes when I was 14 (both have dropped off the list a LONG time ago ) But obviously, finding a new world record is much harder .

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that this won't be prime.

If a 15 year old student is able to write a program to test prime numbers of that size, he knows the subject very well and it will be no problem for him to hide prime95 in the home computer that his parents don't find it (maybe by reducing tsting speed that not too much heat is generated and the fans don't get too noisy)

let's see if it's prime or not...

Unless this person knows a whole lot of math, he would have had to start the test at age 13.

If there was a conclusion to the story of the volunteered prime being tested in Feb.-March, I missed it. I presumed it tested out composite, but any reaction from the proposer etc.?

Not everyone's parents are computer-inept. There's always task manager, and a slow-running test may take *way* too long to be practical.

Not prime. AFAIK no one ever heard from the claimant again, though obviously he was was notified about the negative result.
