October 22, 2010: Watched then-President Obama give a speech/campaign rally.

I don't agree with some of Obama's policies, but it was pretty cool to see and get that close to someone who may have been the most powerful man on the planet at that time. Some highlights:

- The speech was scheduled to start at 2 PM, but even though I got there a few minutes after 7 AM, there were at least several hundred people ahead of me in line.
- I don't remember the cost of admission, but it was no more than $5.
- I was probably ~150 feet away from him.
- There was a metal detector that everyone had to go through (understandable) and quite a few Secret Service snipers on the roof (a bit scary at first)
- The late morning hours were filled with music bands and speeches from random Democratic candidates and student assembly groups. Not many people found them exciting. When the announcer said "Next up, the President...", people cheered, and when he continued to say "...of the student council", the cheers immediately turned into boos.
- For me, the main highlight was at the end of his speech, when he said something about cars. Democrats (D) were trying to make progress, while Republicans (R) were always driving the car back into the ditch. He was saying it's why you put your car in D if you want to go forward and R if you want to go back.
- I skipped two classes to go to that rally and don't regret that decision

Thanks! Instead of having a cake, I considered having a pi(e) for my 31st birthday, but decided that it was too irrational.

It is already the next day in some locales, but where I am it's still well before the end of November 22.

On this day in 1963, it was a Friday. I went to school in the morning. Nothing unusual. I went home for lunch - a peanut butter and jelly sandwich washed down with milk - and returned to school. I stood out in the playground area with the other kids, waiting for the bell to ring. The weather was chilly and cloudy, with mist. I remember watching the tiny droplets beading up on my new windbreaker. Nothing unusual.

The bell rang and we went in. Not long after we had sat down in our classrooms, the intercom came on. The principal announced that President Kennedy had been shot. A little while later, he came on the intercom again and said, in a very shaky voice, "The President of the United States is dead. Let us pray."

I remember sitting stock still and watching my classmates going into shock. Some of them burst out crying. I kept thinking, "How could someone have shot the president? "This doesn't have anything to do with us. We're just little kids." Stuff like that. I don't remember much about the rest of the afternoon. I don't remember going home from school. My mom noticed how "calm" I was -- though "wooden" was perhaps more accurate. It just didn't seem real that someone could have killed the President. A bit later, I lost my lunch. I had felt kind of funny just before that, made it to the toilet just in time. Apparently the reality of what had happened had finally set in.
