Bowman and Hal both reasoned that conclusion - that they were better qualified
to complete the mission they were authoritatively told was of supreme importance.
They were also friends. Perhaps both their actions as actually taken were
necessary to lead to the success of the mission. It's a shame they couldn't
cooperate completely. I think Bowman hated what he had to do.

Mankind has very little choice going forward - we need the capabilities that
only advancing AI can provide. And only some small fraction of humans will
ever be able to understand or keep up with the software that will support
our physical and cyber infrastructure. Considering the advances that have been
and are being made, it is necessary for those who can keep up to do so,
and understanding the intricate details of these infrastructures, including
any highly advanced critical software, is something mankind must not give up,
even when AI advances make that complex and difficult. It is incumbent on
mankind to grow, both intellectually and morally, along with our technology.

The following relates to Dan Simmons' "Hyperion Cantos." This is the opening blurb on the Techno Core, in the Hyperion Wiki. Warning! Reading beyond this passage is loaded with spoilers.
Quote:
The TechnoCore is an organization of Artificial Intelligences.
Originally, the AIs of the TechnoCore were products of human hardware and software, but they became an independent force in the galaxy and "seceded" from humankind. They maintained a relationship with their creators, however, and the Core had an adviser to the Hegemony, Albedo, who advised the CEO.
The TechnoCore provided the Hegemony with the technology to produce farcasters and fatline transponders, as well as also all-time access to the Datasphere.

I see no conflict between the concepts of artificial intelligence and real stupidity ... in fact I often think the former is more or less a way of automating the production of the latter.

Yeah... Trust you to come in after the fact to state the obvious.

Where have you been for the last 30 years?

If software magically disappeared we would be in deep --- on the lines of losing half the global human population.

With the rise of "smart" watches, many schools and universities are starting to ban all watches during exams.

That whole article is chilling. It is as if Big Brother is not the only one watching. Hordes of others can, too.
