What platform would you suggest? Perhaps a PDF fill in form?
This forum works for that, right?

Did you see how diligently the OP answered the questions in my first post?

What makes you think a form will magically make the poster be more diligent?

They can be kept at arms length until they fill it out offline from the forum. Until the form is filled out and returned, no access. I dealt with someone else who didn't understand that the p in 2^p-1 has to be prime and that rando online calculators can't handle a proper primality test.

Terrible idea IMO. Forms are useless.

What is wrong with talking to them?

They selectively reply to the least important questions.

If we have a stock flowchart that we develop and the mods (and others that wish to help) follow it when replying, we can guide the ops to the answer.

The on-line form would help speed it up, rather than having a lot of back and forth.

I think the first question should be: How many decimal digits is it?

Playing Devils advocate. Here is specimen sequence of forum posts.
Everyone else but the two protagonists keeps quiet.

JR User: claims to have found a new prime.

Uncwilly: how many decimal digits does your answer have?

JR_User: answers, or does not.

Uncwilly: posts next question, if any.

JR_User: answers, or not.

and so on.

I concede it is not streamlined but it seems to work to me.

Uncwilly, of course, will have all the questions prepared and be ready for them to be pasted then posted.

So what series of questions, flow chart, or algorithm would you suggest?

Or even what individual questions should we use? I have gathered some up from this thread and others.

I hadn't used the decimal digits one before, but I think it can be a good first one, because it establishes if it is a record or a prize winner.

I am totally with retina here. What's wrong with talking with them? Even when they are trolling, they are fun, unless they are morons and take up too much of our time (in which case, ban!). The "show us how you found the factor" sentence made my day (and asked to the wrong person, too), I didn't laugh so hard for long time. I was already concocting stupid answers like "I searched" or "dreamed" about it, but I did not reply because the thread was already advanced and passed over when I read it (other users already addressed it). But some of them are not trolling, they are sincere and innocent, and we may miss the opportunity to teach them something if we insulate them. Some of them may want to learn... (yeah! I learned a lot of things from the people on this forum, myself!).

No idea... I just found this prime, using this program, etc.. (I have some friends which are quite smart and good in their - technical related - job, but wouldn't know to use a logarithm to say how many digits 2^p-1 has, for some given p). So, how this filters out the trolls, the morons, etc, from the "honest" or "serious", guys? (not counting the fact that such characteristics can be mixed, some crank/troll/moron could still be honest in his belief).

Game over, in that case. Let the differently clued brag elsewhere.
