On April 2, 1968 Clarke and Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" premiered in NYC.
It has delighted, baffled, and awed viewers ever since.
I was lucky to have seen it in glorious Cinerama once.

Thanks for the reminder! Wow! I remember seeing that in a theater in a small town in BC. I was three years old. That movie influenced the development of my worldview.

Fake snarkiness aside, the lobotomization of HAL is one of the saddest scenes in movie history. The poor guy had been told by the highest authority that his mission was of supreme importance and he felt he could not let anything jeopardize it. Essentially, he was lied to.

Back in the day, an intellectual was someone who could hear the William Tell Overture and not think of the Lone Ranger. These days it is either someone who can hear the Blue Danube Waltz and not think of space stations, or Ride of the Valkyries and helicopters.

Incidentally my beer (dunkel Bock Damm if you are interested) is currently sitting on a mat which SWMBO gave me this last Xmas. The inscription on the mat reads:

HAL 9000
LOGIC MEMORY SYSTEMS
HAL LABS - URBANA, ILLINOIS

She also gave me a mug with the same design.

Not only the best science fiction movie ever made, it ranks high in the religious genre too.

HAL definitely had the best lines, though "Oh my God! It's full of stars!" is still widely quoted, especially by astronomers.

The "It's full of Stars" line was never said in 2001, but in the sequel 2010.
Also, it's said by Dave, Not HAL.

In 2001, there is no dialog as Dave approaches the giant monolith and gets sucked in.

This *has* to be documented somewhere... How the *heck* did they do those kinds of effects in the late '60s? Does anyone have any references immediately at hand?

The wikipedia article does a pretty good job of explaining the effects and has a few pictures of some of the sets used. I have ( somewhere, sigh ) an entire book that shows in detail how the movie was made.

One of the "special effects" in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey was the graphics and other images on the computer monitors. Computers of the time just weren't capable of doing things like that. But Arthur C. Clarke et al reckoned that one day they would be. Science fiction at its finest.

Dave Bowman's line "My God, it's full of stars!" is in novel 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, but not in the Kubrick movie.

Clarke wrote a short story, The Sentinel, which is a predecessor of sorts.
