As an outside observer, I am simply confused as to what is going on in the USA.

When I was being trained on how to use guns, I was first taught how dangerous they were. Watching an animal being shot through the heart, for example, made it very clear how dangerous these things were.

Watching an animal only wounded by way of a non-lethal hit by a bullet made the lessons even more graphic. As an aside, my trainers had a rule that if you didn't kill the animal with the first shot but injured it, you had a responsibility to put it out of its misery.

And, we always ate the meat. This was never "trophy".

In this recent post I quoted from Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter From the Birmingham Jail. That quotation comes to mind again.

That is in one country. No other country even gets close. Not even within an order of magnitude. I haven't seen global figures, but I wouldn't be surprised to discover that all other places combined won't even get to one tenth of that value.

Even if it is only one student per school killed by gun violence, it is gruesome enough. Knowing that multiple deaths occurred at some of the listed schools makes it even worse. Sometimes we don't need to precisely measure the magnitude of the horror.

There is no need to work hard to come to a conclusion. Sandy Hook, Columbine, Robb, and Virginia Tech should be enough to mark the list for what it is, even outside of this thread. A friend of a friend had posted this list on 'social media'. I grabbed it and sorted it, removed duplications, and then shared it here. The volume of the list is enough alone. 240. That is what is important.

The Onion has shown how frequent events like this are by running the same with a new picture and location for many of these.

This list does not include the supermarket type events like in Buffalo or the one years back in Arizona.
It does not include the salon and barber shop ones.
It does not include the night clubs and the music venues.
It does not include the churches like last week's.
It does not include the synagogues.
It does not include the work place ones.
It does not include the private parties.

Just the schools alone are too many.

A school in my hometown almost had their second shooting a few years back. A couple of students plans were found out and they were stopped. This same place had suffered a mass shooting decades ago. A young friend of mine lost classmates in a high school shooting.

Any single one is a tragedy.
To have a list like this is a travesty.
