Isn't there usually a fairly substantial drop in prices with current high-end CPUs etc about this time of year (as newer and more powerful ones come out)?

Prices generally fall for the new high-end CPUs when the new ones come out, not at any specific time of the year. Looks like you'll have to wait until the fall.

That's fine. I'm just looking to pick a up a decent i7 for relatively cheap once prices come down. I want something that will tear those high 45M+ LLs up

If you have a Microcenter nearby, it's only $200 for a Core i7 920.

I don't. I also do not know how to assemble computers or anything- I would have to buy all the other parts and then pay someone to assemble them.

If you need a complete system, Dell has some with Core i7 920's for $750.

Yes, but I am not looking for a fully decked out system. I just want one for prime crunching (a quad core), preferably with HT if this makes a big difference. If HT does not make that big of a difference, then I would aim for something like the Q6700 which is still quad core and has a fast clock speed.

If you want an i7 system that's as cheap as possible, you should probably build your own (whether assembled by you or someone else). Standard computer makers just aren't going to have good cheap crunching machines for sale.

How about an Phenom II system? These seem to be comparable to an i7 unless I am missing something?
