The latter is rather obviously a transposition cipher of some English text but the former may take a little thought.

It is very unlikely that you have a sentence with the first 8 words being of length exactly 5. Are the spaces really word boundaries?

Standard arrangement of cryptograms for a very long time.

Telegrams were charged by the word, eventually standardized at five letters. Grouping by fives minimized transmission costs.

Word boundaries are very rarely preserved. They leak far too much information.

How did you come up with this?
And what happens with codewords that are longer, just the same wrapping around?

Should anyone be interested in knowing what the characters regarding post number 31 mean (I have been wishing for years):

Silver cup (item Q) from Marvdasht, Fars, with Linear-Elamite inscription on it, from the 3rd millennium BC and kept in the National Museum of Iran. According to Desset, the inscription reads "For the Lady of Marapsha (toponym), (named) Shumar-asu, I made this silver vase. In the Temple that will be known by my name, Humshat, I dedicated it with goodwill for you."

What I find amazing is that the characters are very abstract and geometric. Even more amazing when you consider that it was in use up to 5k years ago.

Hi SmartMersenne and all,

In the engineering world, I learned an expression - PIDUMA - That is, pulled it directly out of my a**.

I heard a second hand story that there were electrical schematics that had an author of PIDUMA. Nobody wanted to take credit for them. But, I only worked for two firms.

To be honest, I could not decipher this cipher text. I just tried a little bit.

The acronyms I've most commonly seen for this are WAG or SWAG - (stupid/silly) wild *ssed guess.

Interesting... I was hanging out in this channel to learn to solve puzzles, but it looks like instead I am learning a lot of other acronyms.
