You don't need to know any languages. Not even English. I could just have easily given a Cyrillic proverb, or an Arabic phrase, and you could still perfectly decode it back to the original Cyrillic or Arabic (once you know the method).

Anyone who is interested solving classical cryptographic systems is well advised to get a copy of Helen Gaines' Cryptanalyis. Despite it first being published in 1939 it is still readily available. I have the Dover edition.

Just pulled my copy off the self and found two pieces of paper inside it.

The latter is rather obviously a transposition cipher of some English text but the former may take a little thought.

It's a possibility. Unlikely, IMO, given that no other evidence of such pastimes has survived, but still a possibility.

I have always admired the perfect artisanry and symbols on this 20th-Century-BC cup. Apparently Covid-Isolation has finally paid off in deciphering it.

And this discovery is incredible, because until now the oldest writing system from Mesopotamia with proto-wedge-shaped tablets from the Bronze Age around 3300 BC. With the deciphering of this new system of writing, we now know that around -2300 BC. Another script with linear Elamit existed and that one of its oldest forms, the Proto-Elamite script, is as old as the first Mesopotamian cuneiform texts. François Desset explains that the Mesopotamian Proto-Cuneiform script did not produce the Iranian Proto-Elamite, but that they are actually two contemporary systems that evolved and changed in two different periods.

Consequently, the appearance of the writing system in the Middle East is being questioned as we know that Iran developed its system in parallel with that of Mesopotamia.
