Upgrading a LGA 775

I was throwing around the idea of upgrading the processor in my current general use/gaming computer. It's a LGA 775 and I currently have a Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz) in there right now. Would any of you have a recommendation for a good upgrade for the price? Or am I pretty much maxed out for the socket?

with "price" how much money do you have for upgrading?

With just a quick search, I am inclined to say that getting a significant boost on this platform costs a large enough fraction of a new, up-to-date rig (eg: Ivy Bridge i5), to make updating a questionable path. Of course, that does depend on what kind of increase you would consider "significant."

Part of the equation should figure in energy cost differences and things like Core 2 Quad memory bottle-necking.

For $139, that 2.66 GHz looks nice, but I wonder if I'd notice any difference.

A roughly 10% increase would likely get lost in the background noise. Generally, in terms of human perceptions, a 50-100% increase would be a more reasonable aim.

EDIT: Apologies for the somewhat garbled shopping post. I had to excise quite a bit of extraneous material, such as pictures with incompatible imbedding code.

I guess my other option would be upgrade from Windows XP to 7 and increase the RAM from 3GB to 8GB.

I don't know how much money you have, but I would toss out LGA 775 a and upgrade to a new motherboard(Ivy Bridge/Haswell) even if you have to wait.

See, for my personal gaming computer that I'm building, I am waiting for Haswell. I'm getting Intel Extreme Mobo, best haswell i5-xxxxk processor, 8GB ram, Geforece GTX 570.

But this computer is basically for extensive small office work, and it makes a great gaming rig on the side. I can't get rid of the mobo per bosses instructions, only upgrade what I currently have. Basically, what I'm trying to figure out is what would give me the best bang for the buck as far as upgrades go.

You better start with the motherboard's capabilities. If it is an older board then 1066Mhz might be its maximum bus speed, meaning it might be already close to maxed out with the Q6600. The Q8xxx/Q9xxx series uses a 1333Mhz (some even a 1600Mhz) FSB.

So I would go to the manufacturer's web site and get the CPU support list for that particular board before you do anything else. Then if upgrading is possible, you can pick up used CPU's on eBay for about half of the prices mentioned above.

Also be aware that you might have to update the motherboard's BIOS.

I decided to pull the plug on my 5.5 year old Q6600 (even though it is still working - but not as spiffy as when it was young). Got me an 3570K and an ASUS m/b ($285 in total), and will borrow 8Gb from my other comp. The 570 will feel better in this environment, too (The PCI-E was v.1 on the old board, obviously).

Batalov's new pc should perform around twice as fast according to my calculations. It should also use less power. I really should get around to replacing mine at some point. I am waiting for DDR4 first though myself.
